Be Unique and Memorable

Stop Wasting Your Time at Networking Events

The Biggest Networking Mistake

You’ve probably been to a number of business networking events. I know I have.

And at first, I found them both uncomfortable and unproductive.

I would talk to lots of people and occasionally was even given the chance to stand up and share my 30-second “elevator statement” with the group. But nobody ever seemed to pay attention or have any interest in what I was saying.

Worst of all, few of these experiences ever led to real leads, much less actual client work.

Finally, after seven years wasting hundreds of hours joining and attending dozens of networking groups and events, I made a follow up call and the guy didn't even recognize my name.

"That's enough," I said to myself.

And I developed a better way.

The First Mistake

The problem with most elevator statements is that they’re too general. They say nothing and leave you sounding just like everyone else around you.

A great elevator pitch does exactly the opposite. It’s unique to you. It’s memorable. It differentiates you from any current or future competitor.

It helps people see that you are one of a kind.

It expresses your value and your passion in a way that inspires others to call you and work with you.

The Bigger Mistake

The bigger mistake people make is thinking that once they have their 30-Second Elevator Pitch, they're all set.

But the 30-Second Elevator Pitch only works in one situation.

When you're introducing yourself to a room full of people.

There are two problem with that.

  1. You don't always get a chance to introduce yourself in front of everyone
  2. There's lots more opportunity in the individual conversations.

Let's take a closer look at that second point.

Because using any sort of rehearsed speech when you're talking to some one-to-one is, well... awkward.

Which is why it's so important to have a sharp, interesting, memorable answer to a question we all hear every day:

“What do you do?”

Answer well and they’ll engage in a conversation.

Answer well and they’ll ask for more information.

Answer well and they’ll follow up with you the next day.

Here's what happened to one client with a new 7 Word Elevator Pitch:

“I was at a networking event the other night. It wasn’t a great event, but I was sitting next to a business coach who now wants to meet with me to learn how I can help her clients. Then I was talking to someone in the hall who knows someone who’s a perfect referral for me. It works!”

The 30-Second Elevator Pitch

Our facilitator makes a change one day at one of my networking groups.

Instead of giving our traditional 30-Second Elevator Pitch, he has us go around the room and answer one question.

It's easy to answer.

It's fun to talk about.

It instantly differentiates you and it attract the very people you want to meet.

I learn more about the people sitting around the table that day than in the previous three years of twice a month listening to their traditional Elevator Pitch.

And that's what I teach in this course.

I teach how to answer that question in a way that attracts the people you want to meet.

This is not a lecture course.

It's a roll up your sleeves and develop your own personalized, authentic, engaging Elevator Pitch.

You'll create:

  • 7-Word Answer to "What do you do"
  • 1-Sentence Power Question to grab people's attention
  • 2-Sentence Client Success to Start Better Conversations
  • 1-Sentence Call to Action so you can finish this conversation while strengthening the relationship.
  • Full 30-Second Elevator Pitch that inspires people to follow up with you
  • A 5-minute follow-up approach that means you never again have to make a phone call from a stack of business cards
  • A business networking system that attracts more paying clients from fewer networking events

People will Approach You

"I gave my new 30-Second Elevator Pitch at a networking event the other night, and two people approached me afterwards to invite me to do a presentation for their company. Thanks for your help!”

Jack LaCava, Ace of Connections

I hit the street cold calling for my first business in 2002.

One day I walked into the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce.

I was there to sell them window cleaning.

They sold me instead on a chamber membership.

That business now employs 21 people and brought in over three-quarters of a million dollars last year.

And since founding my second business in 2005, I haven't made a single cold call.

I built it entirely on the strength of my relationships.

On attracting the right people through my business network.

People will Qualify Themselves by Asking You Questions

I tried every kind of Elevator Pitch.

Until I hit on a formula that works.

And I didn't stop there

I tested it.

On myself.

With clients.

Across all industries.

Now I've used this approach with hundreds of private clients.

And over 20,000 people have used my online tool to craft their own personalized Elevator Pitch.

And they all say the same thing:

“In my 31 years in business I’ve had maybe 2 people
ask a clarifying question after hearing my old elevator pitch.

Since working with you I have tripled that number in less than a week.

— Craig Cerretani, Longfellow Benefits

About the instructor

Conversation Starters

I'm an introvert who's started productive business conversations on ski lifts, at Rotary dinners, at Chamber of Commerce networking events, at my kids' play dates, and after keynote speeches.

I've also created awkward silences, run out of things to say, followed up with people who didn't remember meeting me, squandered some great opportunities, and thought that there must be a better way.

A Passion for Teaching

As an introvert, I get it. Networking can be frustrating, and baffling, and a huge waste of time.

So I'm on a mission to fix all that. I've joined several chambers and a handful of networking groups. I've attended hundreds of events and interacted with thousands of people.

I've made all the mistakes, so you don't have to.
